That day, she received the note. It was a small slip of paper saying,
"Dear Jenny (Dorm G13c),
Please meet at the Meeting Room for a short meeting at 10.30am today. Thank you.
Signed, Madam Silver."
Three other girls room from the same dormitory had received a similar note, Cleo, Mary and Prudence. There was much murmuring amongst the girls. What did it mean? What was going to happen? All four girls had been amongst fourteen elected to be leaders of the Girls' Dorms, a rank above the rest aged thirteen. Those chosen were elite, only forty were chosen out of hundreds that applied, twenty girls and twenty boys.
10.30am was Study Break, Jen always went to break with Dom and Fred.
"Dear Dom and Fred,
I have to meet Madam Silver during Study Break at 10.30am. Please don't wait for me. See you at our table.
- Jen"
Every clique had a table to themselves. It was not arranged, it just happened, like the many mysteries to the Residents. She neatly printed the words "Dominic and Frederick, Dorm B13c" and slid it under the door.
xxx
Jen was worried. Cleo and Prudence had said that their eyelids had twitched the previous day - a sign of bad luck, and Mary had a nightmare last night. She had dreamt that she had not become a Dorm Leader. From Jen, nothing. Not a clue.
They tried to reason what the note meant, coming with all sorts of theories, trying to be as positive as possible. But in their minds, they all knew the truth. They had not made it.
xxx
Crushed. Although she had been mentally prepared, Jen was still crushed by the truth. Fifteen heads nodded, fifteen pairs of damp eyes, each trying to be strong, trying not to shed a tear in front of each other and Madam Silver.
Jen felt as if her heart was being squeezed by an invisible hand, so tight you could almost hear it break. Her throat constricted, tightening until she could not breathe. She suddenly sucked in a breath, trying not to choke on it.
"There will always be other chances. Next year, the year after or maybe when you graduate to High Section. Many others have become Dorm Leaders in High Section with no previous experience as a Dorm Leader in Middle Section. Your skill may take time to develop, maybe just not this year. Life goes on."
Jen nodded, hoping it would make her feel better. Rubbish, she thought, Dorm Heads have been telling me how good a leader I am since First Elementary.
Fifteen pairs of feet quickly shuffled out of the Meeting Room, trying not to drag and show their disappointment. Cleo put her hand around Jen's shoulder.
"Sir Robertson would be so disappointed. He recommended you for the title highly."
" Well, he hinted at it."
xxx
Maybe I was not friendly enough. All my group members talked about was, "Seth Matthews is so HOT!" and "Ray Judge is so CUTE!" None of them was anything was anything Jen was particularly interested in, so she kept her silence, making her seem quiet and shy, but it was not the truth.
The reality hit her. Hard. Sister Jane had told her if she said her prayers earnestly and correctly, whatever she asked would be granted, and she had said it so confidently. But I did say them right, didn't I? Jen thought. Or was it the way I wrote it?
" I would really like to be a Dorm Leader, but if I don't I will try to be strong, but I'm really thankful for the fun Selection Campwe had yesterday."
Her faith was being tested.
